Professor of Practice, Freshman Advisor, Director of the Leadership Academy

Sid Alvis is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Electrical Engineering, and an Executive MBA from Northern Illinois University. After an assignment in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Alvis entered the nuclear energy industry as a Systems Engineer at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant in New Hill, NC, during final construction, plant start-up, and the first year of commercial operations. He continued in the industry in several design engineering and Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) corporations, working as engineering lead; Project Manager; Manager, Technical Integration and Quality; Chief Engineering Manager, Cyber Security; and Director, U.S. Nuclear I&C Operations.

He joined the staff of UNC Charlotte’s College of Engineering in 2022 to engage students who are inquisitive and eager to learn: fundamentals of engineering, leadership and team-building skills, open-honest communication, and continuous improvement of individuals and programs. He also looks forward to students who will challenge him and help him continue to grow as well.
