Adding a College of Engineering Minor or Concentration
Students advised in OSDS can request to add a minor or a concentration once they have moved to their major department. Your first-year advisor can assist you with enrolling in any first-year (lower-division) courses for the minor/concentration as long as you have room in your schedule to add the course.
The first-year advisor can only approve upper-division courses for the minor/concentration when the department gives the advisor permission and only when the student is in the semester they will be moving to the department.
Students will be reassigned to a departmental advisor when they have satisfied the first-year progression requirements. At that time, they can speak with their new advisor to add the minor or concentration.
Changing to a Major Outside of the College of Engineering
Students wishing to change to a non-College of Engineering major must work with a new advisor to discuss the change process.
We recommend you speak with an advisor from the University College during their Open Office Hours.
What Happens After Form Has Been Submitted
- College (First-Year AdvisingTeam) review of submitted forms can take 5-10 business days
- Approved requests will be forwarded to Office of Registrar’s routing queue to update your major.
- Once received in the Office of the Registrar, the typical processing time is 3-5 business days, depending on the volume of requests in the queue.
- Students should check their UNC Charlotte transcript in Student Self Service to see if their major has been updated.
Changing to an Engineering Major from a Non-College of Engineering Major
First-Year Engineering (FEGR) is the major code the Lee College of Engineering uses for students in a non-LCOE degree major who are interested in pursuing an engineering major after the start of their first semester in the college. Students who are assigned as an FEGR major are not guaranteed admission to a College of Engineering major. The designation helps the college track students who want to declare an engineering major but are not eligible at this time.
- FEGR allows students to enroll in courses for the engineering major and transition smoothly into their major.
- FEGR designation helps students pursue their interest in engineering while developing a solid foundation in key engineering principles with the needed support from our college enrichment programs.
Current students who seek eligibility to declare a major in the Lee College of Engineering are required to:
- Have no more than two attempts per course, including withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
- Complete the First-Year curriculum of the program of interest.
- Achieve an overall GPA
2.50 for Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Systems Engineering
2.80 for Mechanical Engineering
2.20 for Engineering Technology and Construction Management
Students may request admission to an engineering program after satisfying all the above requirements. Meet with the Director for Transition Advising for more details on the declaration of major process or review the department’s website.
