Current Students
Students advised in the Office of Student Development and Success who want to declare a new major within the College of Engineering should ideally do so by the first week of the new semester. Students are encouraged to meet with a first-year advisor in OSDS to discuss their future goals and the effect that changing majors will have on their semester schedules.
Students must be in good academic standing.
IMPORTANT: The Change of Major form is not accepting new change requests from January 17, 2025 to February 28, 2025.

Changing to an Engineering Major From Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or First-Year Engineering Majors
Engineering Technology or Construction Management (ETCM) majors who have already started classes in the College of Engineering must meet the requirements below to change to an engineering major.
Students who do not meet the requirements will have their major updated to First-Year Engineering and be permitted to enroll in the courses for the engineering major.
First Year Engineering (FEGR) is the major code the Lee College of Engineering uses for students interested in pursuing an engineering major who did not meet the University’s first-year admission requirements or have decided to change after the start of their first semester in the college.
FEGR allows students to enroll in courses for the engineering major and transition smoothly into their major.
FEGR designation helps students pursue their interest in engineering while developing a solid foundation in key engineering principles with the needed support from our college enrichment programs.
ETCM and FEGR majors must meet the following criteria:
(1) Have earned credit of a grade of C or better in Calculus I (MATH 1241)*
(2) Pass MATH 1241 within two attempts, including withdrawing from a course with a grade of W
(3) Minimum 12 Credit Hours earned at UNC Charlotte
(4) Have a 2.4 or better cumulative UNC Charlotte GPA
*First-semester students starting in higher math can declare at the end of their first semester as long as they satisfy minimum credit hours and have the required cumulative GPA.
Students who complete the above requirements can submit a change of major request at the end of the semester. A decision will be made after the final grades are posted.
Students starting a lower math course will be changed to FEGR and allowed to enroll in the EN program courses.
What Happens After Form Has Been Submitted
- Review of submitted forms can take 5-10 business days
- When your form is reviewed, a first-year advisor will add your change of major request to the Office of Registrar’s routing queue to update your major.
- Once received in the Office of the Registrar, the typical processing time is 3-5 business days, depending on the volume of requests in the queue.
- Students should check their UNC Charlotte transcript in Student Self Service to see if their major has been updated.
Changing to a Major Outside of the College of Engineering
Students wishing to change to a non-College of Engineering major must work with a new advisor to discuss the change process.
We recommend you speak with an advisor from the University College during their Open Office Hours.
Students should also review the Student Declaration Guide to know more about the requirements for the new major.
Adding a LCOE Minor or Concentration
Students advised in OSDS can request to add a minor or a concentration once they have moved to their major department. Your first-year advisor can assist you with enrolling in any first-year (lower-division) courses for the minor/concentration as long as you have room in your schedule to add the course.
The first-year advisor can approve upper-division courses for the minor/concentration in the semester the student will be moving to the department.
Students will be reassigned to a departmental advisor when they have satisfied the first-year progression requirements. At that time, they can speak with their new advisor to add the minor or concentration.
